Making android apps are fun, but do you know basics of programming or is this your first experience with programming?

You can start with The Java™ Tutorials. It's free online and in ebook form, and also available in print (paid). See The Really Big Index for the topics covered.

My book for my intro comp sci course is
    http://www.amazon.com/Starting-Out-J.../dp/0132855836

it eases you into the api step by step and the programming assignments are really good for cementing the api into your memory, it was good for me but I had absolutely no programming experience and I've really only used two java books before the other one only slightly, idk if its the same case for you.

You could probably find an older version online at your own discretion lol.
