Default New - Need Advice about Java Based site to collect data for dissertation

First, I apologize for my ignorance. I am very new at Java. I do have some basic C++ experience from several years ago, but I did not get into Java at the time. I went into a CJ program and am now working on my dissertation. I am wanting to develop a training program (web-based) that will be used by law enforcement agencies to train recruits more effectively on recognizing threats. This is lacking and the research could actually be beneficial for safety.

So, that's what I'm doing, what I'm wanting to know is if Java is the correct language for me to focus on and the feasibility of the project. What I need to do is have an image pop up (a weapon or no weapon initially with the complexity of the imaging increasing), the user would then select one of two keys to select if it is a threat or not. I would need to have the time required to decide the answer and if they were correct returned to me. This doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to do, I just want to make sure I'm not running into anything crazy...so I came to the experts.

The idea being that the repetition and varying complexity of the program will prepare the recruits and aid in the use of force decision making process. This program is obviously a small part of the overall project, but it would be integral to good outcomes (I'm utilizing some vision tracking software to pre- and post-test recruits ability to recognize threats in real situations, as well as some other things).

I'm open to any sort of feedback.

Yes, for what you describe, Java is more than adequate and completely appropriate. What we can't know is your ability to learn Java well enough to program what you've described. Java GUI programming is not something you can learn to do even poorly overnight. Depending on how much time you have each day to study and practice, how well you can remember and leverage your basic C++ experience, and how hard you're willing to work, you could probably become proficient enough to do what you've described in 6 months to a year, assuming you're at the upper end of the motivation and ability scales.

    Good luck!
