It depends on a couple things (maybe more):
1. What do you consider "Advanced Java?"
2. Are you competent in any other OOP language?
But in general, your question is akin to asking, "Can I become a heart surgeon without studying biology?”

But apart this, If you want to go very far in any programming language, you should start from the basics and advance progressively, even if it means to take a quite long time (several months, at least).
I have found, on forums, too many people that try to do "advanced" things in Java (Swing, multithreading, networking, etc..) but having serious gaps about basic java & OOP concepts.
