    Default Your Favorite Weather?

I love the weather and have for a long time; in fact, I want to study meteorology as a career, when the time arises.

I love storms of any kind, but especially those relating to the season. So, since it's winter, I'm begging for heavy snowfalls and ice storms (though most people give me shocked looks when I say so). I get so excited when I see snow or ice falling, and I don't really know why.

So, I want to know, what's your favorite weather?

Summer. Specially when sun is almost going to set down. That takes me back to my lovely days, i can't ever forget.

I am a summer person myself too. Really not a fan of the cold weather unless I'm going skiing!
It's getting colder and colder here now. I don't like the way it gets darker earlier and everything slows down

Yeah, even though I like storms, most of the best fun times I've had have been with friends outside during summer evenings. Usually here, around those times, the temperatures are perfect (upper 70's) and it feels great.

I am a summer person myself too. Really not a fan of the cold weather unless I'm going skiing!
Gah! I'm outnumbered! Do you ski often?

Yeah that is kinda the depressing part of winter. D:
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here it is 50 F for a high today! That's 20 F above average! That's means it will rain today, not snow... T_T

Storms are good deffiently at night. Wish I was in some warmer tempatures than here in Wisconsin, but you get used to the cold weather.

Night storms are cool, but I get frustrated when all of them occur at night, because I end up sleeping through them! Are you in northern Wisconsin, or more toward the South? I can imagine how cold the northern portion must be... *shudders*

I have a friend I went to college with, who was a meteorology major (I think) and a computer science minor. Since graduating, he has set up his own weather site, including a really cool Java program people can download to get weather alerts on their desktops. Pretty cool stuff, especially if you're a weather nerd AND a Java nerd.

Wow, that is a pretty nice site! Does he have a model that issues forecasts, or does he get them from a large organization? Either way, it's very well done. But it's ironic that you mention that; I had considered making a page that shows forecasts, delay/cancellation chances, etc. for my local area so that people can go there and get all the information they need. Of course, I'm a looooong way from it now, but it's still and exciting thought.

    Thanks for sharing that!

I think it's a combination of both- for stuff like local forecasts and alerts, I think he gets them from the web somewhere. But then he also writes up seasonal forecasts for larger areas, which I believe he creates himself by combining several different forecast models. I'm not positive though, so if you're really curious, I'm sure he'd love your feedback.

    That's really cool.

Sometime, for a project, I want to do something similar for my local area. Of course, I'd grab forecasts from other sites and forecasts, but I'd try to organize a site that gives everyone in my area an appealing display... However, I have yet to learn JavaScript and how to integrate it with HTML, though I have a rough grasp on HTML (enough to create a rather ugly but adequate web page).

I wanted to be a meteorologist as well! I spend half my life looking up at the clouds or the stars (wanted to be an astronomer too). Nothing better than watching an interesting front or a good thunderstorm storm come through.

I live in a really hot city. It's summer now and we can get four or five days in a row of over 40 degrees Celsius (it's a mild 34 at the moment). Perhaps I am a sadist but I love it when it gets that hot. Driving along the freeway with your arm out of the car feels like you are putting it into an oven (I should know, I am a chef) and even the roads tarmac starts to melt. I keep leather gloves in my car so I can handle the plastic steering wheel and gear shift. Good luck making the run to the beach without 2nd degree burns to the soles of your feet (through your flip flops) and no amount of sunscreen will stop the heat stroke... Heaven.

It is 3,780km to the nearest snow from where I live. I did go on a skiing holiday when I was young and loved the snow but I am too adjusted to extreme heat to survive the cold for any duration.

Lucky you Chris... here In Wales, we're lucky to get 25 degrees Celsius during the summer and I keep gloves in the car too, but that's to stop my hands freezing to the wheel

One of my favorite things to do!

Holy crap! That's really hot! It rarely gets that hot here, but during the summer the heat indices do commonly breach the 100's F (upper 30's, low 40's C). What's the hottest weather you can recall having in recent years?
no amount of sunscreen will stop the heat stroke... Heaven
I have to admit, that sounds more like Heaven's fiendish counterpart, if you ask me.
It is 3,780km to the nearest snow from where I live.
That's sad... I would miss snow way too much if I moved away from it. ;D

I feel like snow is the minority in many cases. What's the coldest weather you generally experience each year?

It isn't exactly 'cold' here in Wales throughout the year, but very rainy :p
If I'd have to throw out of number, I'd say about 9-10 degrees C average, lower in the winter :p

The hottest I can recall here in Perth is 43 or 44 C. On day's like this the minimum temperature can be over 30C which makes sleeping damn near impossible. But it's not the actual temperature that hurts - we don't have much in the way of ozone above our heads so the sun has a serious bite to it (it does actually feel like getting bitten stepping into the sun sometimes).

The hottest I have personally experienced is 46C which was in a desert town called Newman. I didn't go outside much that day. Newman is pretty close to Marble bar which is the hottest place on Earth (you could debate that Death Valley is the hottest but hear me out.) In marble bar they build underground. It has the record of 160 consecutive days over 100F (37.8C) and a max recorded temperature of 49.2C. I actually met somebody who lives there and asked them what they do. He said "mostly just survive".

The coldest I can remember was -1C about 15 years ago. Actually, I went surfing that day - it was pretty good and no one else was crazy enough to go out. It was a crappy walk back to the beach though. Freezing temperatures are completely unheard of here - the lowest minimum we had this year by comparison was 15C.

Actually, writing this made me realize I have a passion for the extremes. I moved to Margaret river for 4 years (which is in the South west of WA) where the surf can get as big as Hawaii. The biggest I actually surfed was 8-10foot which is about a two story building at sea level but whenever it got over 20ft I would go down and watch the locals/pros/kamikazes ride waves like this or this

If you love thunderstorms then imagine the earth rumbling under your feet and fine mist getting sprayed hundreds of meters into the air just from water crashing against water. *sighs* I miss margies.

Oh, that's not too bad, but constant rain can make things miserable.

Jeez! That's deathly hot! I don't even want to know what the heat index was. So, do you have to wear extra sunscreen, or reapply it rather commonly to combat the sun?

The hottest I have personally experienced is 46C which was in a desert town called Newman.
Wow! At least it wasn't humid. Humidity + 46C = death.

I actually met somebody who lives there and asked them what they do. He said "mostly just survive".
Just curious... who makes a town in such a place in the first place? :p

Wow. That's a rather warm climate you live in! But surfing, when it's 1C?! Even I wouldn't like to do that, and I'm used to temperatures below 0F (-17.8C)!

The biggest I actually surfed was 8-10foot which is about a two story building at sea level but whenever it got over 20ft I would go down and watch the locals/pros/kamikazes ride waves like this or this
*shudders* I would not be able to bring myself to do that. That would be quite scary...

If you love thunderstorms then imagine the earth rumbling under your feet and fine mist getting sprayed hundreds of meters into the air just from water crashing against water.
Ah, I can imagine... The air must feel so refreshing and cool. Water's power is just crazy.

No you stay of the sun. Stepping out of the shade physically hurts. It's not just the heat you understand, it's the 'bite' of the sun. With that giant hole in the ozone layer the UV causes skin cancer very quickly. I even got sun burnt THROUGH MY SHIRT once - apparently UV can get through the fibers. I own a shirt that boasts 120SPF to specifically combat this. Sunscreen with a high SPF helps but sweat washes it away before it can do much good and getting the crap in your eyes blinds you which sucks when you are in the impact zone of the surf - by the time you hear the wave you haven't the time to duck dive. Sunglasses are probably more important than sunscreen. I know a bloke who got a melanoma in his eye and needed to have it removed. Bloody insurance turned around and said he caused it himself because he was a surfer and didn't pay for his chemotherapy. He survived but the treatment bankrupted his family.

As a rule of thumb, everyone here gets sunstroke once and only once. It feels like you are dying (it does kill people). I have had all kinds of horrible sicknesses but I would rather them all at once than a mild case of sunstroke. Once you have experienced it you have a healthy respect for the power of the sun and try to minimize exposure.

It is humid, but not tropical humidity. Probably about 40%. Enough to cause an afternoon thunderstorm some days.

Aboriginals, sadists the irrevocably insane and miners who don't have a choice.

Actually the water was bliss. Very warm. Getting out sucked. I went a bit loopy on the walk back to the car and started laughing at the pain as my bloodless feet scratched against the corrosive sand. And getting in the hot shower at home hurt as well.

Wow... That's crazy. I feel bad for you for having to deal with that! D: The only problems I ever have to worry about during the summer is high humidity--literally every day the humidity's over 70%. Some days its over 90%. On those days, you step outside and its like some hidden bandit just jumped out of nowhere and wrapped you in a thick blanket. The heat's like a wave that crashes into you and the humidity makes it feel like you're breathing more water than you are air. Luckily, days like this usually mean some nasty storms coming through at night.

I love it when it rains. I can't stand the heat, which is unfortunate because I live in tropical north Australia. There's nothing I enjoy more than sitting in my room, writing code while it's raining/storming outside.
