Yeah, don't bother learning AWT except where there is overlap with Swing such as the layout managers. Just go straight to Swing.

Which line is Porthole_Text line 22, the line that causes the exception?
Have you added debug statements to your code?
Just curious why you're creating an AWT Applet rather than a Swing JApplet?
