    I think your code is almost right. However, I think you need JFrame in order to have graphics on the screen. Notice ColorPanel uses Graphics in order to draw string on the screen. In Main class, I have created an instance of JFrame and ColorPanel. Since the constructor of ColorPanel takes a color argument, I passed Color.BLACK. Finally, I've added that to the frame. Hope this helps. Let me know your comments

    Main.java
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.*;

    public class Main {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            JFrame f = new JFrame();
            f.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            ColorPanel p = new ColorPanel(Color.BLACK);
            f.add(p);
            f.setSize(400, 250);
            f.setVisible(true);
        }
    }

    ColorPanel.java
    import java.awt.*;
    import javax.swing.*;

    public class ColorPanel extends JPanel {
        public ColorPanel(Color backColor) {
            setBackground(backColor);
        }
        public void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
            super.paintComponent(g);

            g.setColor(Color.BLUE);
            g.drawString("hello", 100, 45);
        }
    }
