Or take a book by Cay Horstmann "Java 2" or similar - it could be better than official tutorial for most of beginners.
To achieve the best results make sure you are not only learning the programming language but programming itself. Invent, solve and implement many small tasks and problems for your own amusement, solve problems at dedicated sites etc.
