    Default Application Design

I have created a couple of applications and they all have a 80's style static user interface, I want my interfaces to be more dynamic and interactive similar to modern day apps and websites. What can I do to improve?

I suppose you have used Swing (since you have posted in AWT / Java Swing). User interfaces in Swing are rather "traditional" and not so very "cool". Are you searching for special graphical effects like shadows, animations, fadings and so on? At a certain degree these are possible in Swing but at a cost of more sophisticated code (that require a deeper knowledge on advanced concepts in Java 2D). And there's a book about this: Filthy Rich Clients.

But please, describe your current applications and where/in what you would like to improve.
