I am making a learning experiment and want to gather group online to learn/practice java programming. I see it as project-oriented group consisting of several teams.

I have a stupid question: what incentive are you offering the "gurus" to help out? If they wanted to be involved in a project, chances are they work by themselves or on an open source project already. It's not easy to work with "trainees", which is why people pay thousands of dollars to go to school to learn programming.

Like Kevin says, it may be hard to find "gurus" without some kind of incentive.
I am always up for helping people myself but through experience, helping newbies is hard work!

It takes time, and time is something thats hard to come by.

Thank you for your support. And you can always help with ideas. now, about 15 hours after I done postings here and on some other resources there are 6 people opting in.
I think the main obstacle now is that they need to know each other to learn and work together. And I have to use various mediums to maintain communication, I use OpenStudy.com group as offline posting place, skype for real-time communication and email for notifications.
I am planing to use doodle and gather people in skype to introduce each other at least.

Those who find this interesting, let me know even if you are not willing to participate yourself. Big part of the thing is just observing it as learning experiment.

How will you manage the code between these people?

I suggest looking into source control. Something like - TortoiseSVN
