    The code in post#3 is close. The problem was it did not use the correct method.

    Look at the API doc for the String class. It has methods that can be used to test if a String is empty.

    NOTE: Do not use the == operator to compare Strings. use the equals() method.

    The code should check that the String from the text field is not empty before trying to convert it.
    An if statement could be used to test it.

    Please explain and show what you want.
    Be sure to wrap the output in code tags to preserve its formatting.

    Look at the printf() method as a way to format the output.
