Hi welcome to the forum. I'd say the only way to learn is to do if you don't understand how something works play around with it change things find out what makes it tick. You might want to check out the tutorials on Sun's website

    The Java™ Tutorials
Particularly this one as your just starting
Trail: Getting Started (The Java™ Tutorials)

Are you doing a course in college or are you learning by yourself or what?

I really wish I could take courses but most courses make you take the whole program, if i go specifically java programming it makes me take an online course which i dont know how helpful it will be so i'm trying to do this on my own :/ i have a difficult road ahead of me...
