My name is Chris. I work for a Java development house in support and have little to no Java experience. I've started reading "Head first Java, 2nd Edition" to learn the basics and have a long term plan of being able to dev my own android app.

Hi and welcome! The book is good. Stick to the Java basics and start mobile development, like you said, a lot later.
A good resource for cross reading are the Oracle tutorials and API docs.
