What does an SQL compiler do, or what do you actually mean?

Let's say I have a box where the user writes sql queries. When he pushes a Run button I need a compiler that can interpretate what the user has written and give error messages...for example, if the user writes only select * from and he forgets to write the name of the table, the compiler should be able to give an error specifying the nature of the problem...thanks for the reply!

Oh, I see, would you not just send this command over to the actual SQL connector and let it throw you an exception which you can then return to the user?
