Default What do I need to know to get a job in java programming

    Hi

I am currently doing a bachelor in IT. Have completed 9 modules to date. I seem to have been bitten by the Java bug and am aiming to work as a Java programmer ASAP. I have done Java 1 and 2, Databases (MySQL), OOP, Model Driven Development. I find these all at a very basic level though and want to gain more skills. My question: what is the shortest, yet thorough route on top of my Bachelor study to get work in the field. What do I need to know at what level, like which extra languages do I need aside from Java SE. Is it worth my while to get Oracle certification?, is Oracle certification sufficient to find work without the Bachelor. What is the best way to practice and learn programming. Can this be done alone, or do I need to find open source projects, or other people that are learning too.
I hope my questions are not too "simple", but I am new to programming and really need some information and guidance so that I don't waste time on unnecessary things.

    Thankyou
    Filly

Context? Are you looking in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, north pole? What programming job are you looking for? Contractor, consultant, hired game dev, etc..?

Aside from that, you'll need to have as much programming experience as possible. Any kid having finished a few Java projects should have better chances. Certifications are relevant in some companies, here in Germany and especially in our company they are more or less useless, as the basic certificates don't mean that you can actually program.

Now a days tell me in which country where is no more saturation. There are a lots of java developers in every where but experts are very few in numbers.
If you feel a little bit fun during studying java then java is for you exactly.
There are a lots of things in java in addition to java SE like J2EE , java web start, Java Network Programming, Java and Oracle Security with Encryption, embedded java apps with J2ME but this is replace by Anderiod...
Remember java is not a learning but a very much cool fun......

    Hi,

Well I live in Belgium. I obviously know I wont find work as a programmer tommorrow, but I believe realistically in a year maximum two, with a lot of practicing and learning that I can find work. I am looking to find permanent employment, entry level job obviously. With the prospect of after a good few years doing freelance work, contracting. I ask about the certificate because I don't have any cash to waste. I only want to invest in certification if it is going to be a valuable asset in getting that entry level job. Otherwise I will just keep my core focus on the Bachelor degree and practice like hell. My interests go out to game development and desktop application development. At the moment I am leaning toward desktop application development. But I am still researching it all. That is why I asked this question, I am keen to learn and fishing things out is no problem, but a person does not want to waste unnecessary time learning things that are not key to getting that first job. By the way I am not 18, I am 37 and making a wonderful career switch..

    Thanks for the response
    Filly

Don't waste your time or money on frills until you absolutely know that it will get you something an employer requires or strongly desires.

As you learn and practice, build a portfolio of your work, write a blog, have an online presence that others will find and can learn from and that you can point others to when you decide you're ready to sell your skills to the highest bidder.

    Hi,

I like your idea about writing a blog and online presence. Had not thought of that, sounds like fun. I was going to start on a portfolio later on, but I think I am going to keep complete record of my progress from day one. Then if I apply for work I can be selective of my work and present a decent portfolio. This way I can also see my own progress, which I think can be fun and encouraging.

    Greetings

And, believe me, terribly embarrassing. My code from years ago is horrible

    Good luck, anyway!

@Serializable: I don't believe the link you posted is relevant to the OP's question.
