I've moved this thread to The Cafe because it's not a programming question.

I guess the question is: if you're self taught, why don't you already have a portfolio?

And the answer depends entirely on where you are, what companies you're applying to, what position, etc. Some companies won't let you in the door without a degree. Others won't care at all. It completely depends on your context.

There are very few companies that even let you into their interview without a degree. But that doesn't mean you absolutely NEED a degree to survive. You just need to work hard and work your way up for years, starting from the bottom. But for that you must have an amazing portfolio. I know a person who was self taught and a very good programmer. Although he didn't get a job even at normal level companies, he started from a low level company and worked his way up. 2 years later he left the company for a much better company. There also he worked for 2 years. His boss was very impressed by him and he was getting 30% increment in his salary every 3 months. Then again he left for a better company and now he is working at Infosys. This shows degree does not matter if you have your talents. Most people run after success and for that, run after degree. I say, run after excellence. Success will run after you.

But again for that you need excellence for that. You need to have a gift for that. And that comes from within.
