    Default Java salaries

So I want to know from someone who actually has a job programming or has had, what a realistic salary for a java programmer is?

I'm in college now and I'm concerned about what my future holds. I can switch to pharmacy which can gurantee to make some good money. I've looked on google and see the average but i want to know what it's like first hand to program and if it's worth it for the money.

    Hello BuhRock.

The salary for a Java programmer will vary depending on the sector you work in.

If you were to go the banking/finance route, you could expect anywhere from £45,000+ per year as a starting wage.
Senior developers can make serious money!

On the other hand, joining a small/medium sized company and working on smaller projects would no doubt pay less.

You can easily search job boards to get an idea of what salaries certain types of job pay.
I suggest you have a look here - Java Programming Careers

This is a good guide as to what to expect here in the UK:

An avarage salary of £47,500 sounds good to me.

    Hello,

While I am new here and this probably isn't the greatest place for a first post, I'm going to give my two cents.

Run, dude, Run for the hills. If you are getting into programming for the money you will be sorely disappointed. You can make a lot more money doing almost anything else. I don't want to sour anybody from the profession as I love it, but if your in it only for the money you wont make much.

If you want to be a programmer ask yourself this question:

Have you ever sat at your computer until 3am trying to solve a coding problem that you were working on "Just to see if you could"?

If the answer is "No", sit and think for a bit.
