should I learn JAVA or C++ ?
Hi
I'm majoring in Information security and I'm required to learn and to master at least one programming language. So, I'm thinking either JAVA or C++.
For your information, I have some experiences in PHP and some basic knowledge in JAVA.
A few days ago, I have read too many topics about JAVA and C++ and I know both are used in robots programming. Also, I know a little bit about the differences between java and c++. I know that java does not work directly with hardware whereas C++ has been developed to work directly with hardware.
Most of my friends and relatives have suggested that I should master JAVA for one main reason which is the Increasing Demand for Java Developer Jobs.
That was not the answer that I have been looking for! I know that everyone will end up with a job no matter what language he/she knows. what I need to know and what I'm looking for is what programming language that will help and serve me well in the field of information security in the current time and in the future? I want to be able to build tools software such as anti virus...etc.
Best regards
Re: should I learn JAVA or C++ ?
There is no right answer for this. If you ask this on a Java site, you'll might get more recommendations for Java, if you ask this on a C++ site, you may get more recs for C++ , and if you ask your barber they'll recommend that you get a hair cut. Best that you learn one, then learn the other (the order is up to you), then keep learning languages and programming concepts.
One variable that is important -- do you have local expertise available for either language, someone you can go to for advice?

I think you misunderstood my last question. I wasn't asking about your expertise but rather a local resource or resources, again, someone you can go to for advice. If you tell me that the guy down the hall is a C++ genius, is a great teacher and is a good friend, I'd say, "go learn C++ and use him frequently for help".
Re: should I learn JAVA or C++ ?
Sorry, I didn't pay attention to your question. I thought you asked about my expertise.
I don't know anyone who is really good in C++.
All I have as resources are some books and the internet too.

Please don't look at my example in too concrete a way as C++ was used just as an example. If you know of anyone who is great a Python, then perhaps you should choose Python (a great language for learning OOP programming by the way).

That is how most of us (myself included) learned to code in Java.
Re: should I learn JAVA or C++ ?
Thank you very much, appreciate your help.
I have decided. I'm going to learn JAVA :)
Thanks.
