Newby Question

Hi All,

If anyone can help me with this problem, I'd be your friend for life or if anyone could recommend anyone who has vast java knowledge, that'd be good too.

Basically, I am a student at the University of Winchester at Basingstoke and I need to make as simple a possible, a chat program that will allow me to chat between myself and different people.

The program needs to:

a) Log On
b) Send Message
c) Receive Message
d) Change State when another user logs on
e) Log Off

If anyone can point me in the right direction, it'd be much appreciated. The program needs to be done in Netbeans.
