Estimation help

This is quite a strange question probably but i will try ask it anyway. I am dabbling in some AI within gaming. I am going to try to create a checkers game with a very very simple gui just showing moves and using the algorithims Minimax/Alpha-Beta. My question is - Being an intermediate programmer spending around 2-4 hours a day roughly how long would/should this take? The reason im asking is because if it's something that will take 4 months then i don't think i will waste the time. On the other hand if it's going to take 2-3 weeks then i will.

The GUI could take 4 or 5 days. No idea how long the AI would take.

Ok Thanks doesnt sound too bad, do you mean GUI - meaning implementing the basic rules as in moving pawns and jumping pawns etc?

That sounds more like the AI part.
By GUI I was talking about displaying the board and pieces on some of the squares.
