What? How is anything used as a backend? Backend for what? This is a non-question.
Anything can be used as a 'backend'. You could write some PHP that produced XML/JSON responses to requests for calculations, and that would be a 'compute backend' for another site that collected user input and presented the results.Quote:

There are databases out there written in java, for example Apache Derby. I suggest you write a more clear question and description of what you want to do if you want a more detailed answer
